Quick answer: A running speed tracker on your phone uses GPS to measure how fast and how far you run. Start a trip before you set off, carry the phone where it can see the sky, and read average speed afterwards. Convert speed to pace with our calculator. Instant readings are noisy at running speeds, so trust averages.
TL;DR
- Start before you run.
- Armband or pocket with sky view.
- Average speed is reliable.
- Convert to pace.
- Mind traffic.
Running speed tracker setup
- Open the app outdoors and wait for a fix.
- Tap Start on the Current Trip card.
- Put the phone in an armband or pocket.
- Run.
- Stop and read distance, duration, average and max.
Speed to pace
Use the running pace calculator. 6 mph = 10:00 per mile.
Accuracy
Tall buildings and tree cover make GPS wander. See GPS speedometer accuracy.
Benchmarks
Why instant speed jumps
At running speeds the GPS velocity estimate's small error is a big share of the reading, so the live number can jump by a mile per hour or more between seconds. Arm swing adds more noise if the phone is in your hand. Trip averages smooth this out because they are built from total distance over total time.
Comparing runs fairly
Compare like with like: the same route, similar weather, and the trip started at the same point each time. Hills, wind and traffic lights change average speed far more than day-to-day fitness, so a single slow run is rarely meaningful. Look at the trend over several weeks of saved trips.
Track vs road
On a 400 m running track, GPS often cuts the curves and measures slightly short, because the position estimate is smoothed. On straight roads it does better. If you need precise splits on a track, use the lap markings and a stopwatch; use GPS for road and trail runs.
Carrying the phone
Where the phone rides changes the data. A phone held in the hand swings through a large arc and sees its signal partly blocked by your body on each stride. An armband on the upper arm or a snug chest or waist belt keeps it steadier and higher, which usually gives smoother distance. Avoid deep trouser pockets on long runs: the body blocks more sky and the phone bounces. Whatever you choose, use the same position each time so your runs compare fairly.
