GPS speedometer: live speed from your phone's satellites

Written by Muneeb Rana · Last updated 26 October 2026

Quick answer: A GPS speedometer measures how fast you move using satellite positioning instead of a wheel sensor. Speedometer PRO reads the speed your phone's location system reports with each fix and shows it in MPH or KM/H. It works in any vehicle or on foot, as long as the phone can see enough of the sky.

TL;DR

  • Speed comes from satellite fixes, not your car's wheels.
  • Works in cars, on bikes, on trains and on foot.
  • Open sky gives the best results.
  • Readings lag slightly during hard braking.
  • Your dashboard remains the reference while driving.

How a GPS speedometer measures speed

Your phone receives timing signals from navigation satellites and calculates its position several times a second. Speed can be worked out by comparing positions over time, and modern receivers also use the Doppler shift of the satellite signals, which tends to be smoother. iOS and Android hand the result to apps as a speed value with each location update; Speedometer PRO displays that value and converts the units.

Why it can differ from your car

Car speedometers count wheel rotations and are designed to never show less than true speed, so they usually read a little high. A GPS speedometer has no idea about tyre wear or wheel size, so on a straight road with a good signal it often shows a slightly lower, truer figure. See GPS vs car speedometer.

Where it struggles

Tall buildings reflect signals (multipath), tunnels block them, and dense tree cover weakens them. GPS.gov notes smartphone accuracy of about 4.9 m under open sky, worsening near buildings, bridges and trees. In those places the reading can freeze, lag or jump. The accuracy guide explains what you can and cannot fix.

Getting a steady reading

  • Mount the phone near the windshield, not in a pocket or cupholder.
  • Turn on precise location and high-accuracy mode.
  • Wait a few seconds after launch for the first fix.
  • Keep the app on screen during the trip. More tips: improve GPS signal.

Units and display

Choose MPH or KM/H and an analog or digital meter. The same reading feeds the HUD mode and the trip statistics.

Accuracy reminder

GPS speed is an estimate. Rely on your vehicle's speedometer and road signs.

Limits we state plainly

The GPS speedometer does not know speed limits, does not warn you, and is not a legal measuring device. It also needs location access to work at all.

FAQ

Does a GPS speedometer need internet?

No. Satellite speed works without data; only map tiles may need a connection.

Is GPS speed more accurate than my car?

On open roads it is often closer to true speed, but it can be worse in cities and tunnels.

Why does it show speed while I stand still?

Small position errors can show 1-3 km/h of drift when the signal is weak, especially indoors.

Does it work on a plane?

Often, by a window, if your airline allows phone use; see our airplane guide.

How often does it update?

As often as your phone delivers location updates, usually about once per second.
