Quick answer: Speedometer PRO doubles as an odometer app. While it runs, it adds up the distance between successive GPS fixes and shows the total, separate from each trip's own distance. Unlike your car's odometer it only counts what the phone measured, so it is useful for bikes, rentals and walks, but it does not replace a vehicle's legal mileage.
TL;DR
- Counts GPS distance while the app runs.
- Separate from per-trip distance.
- Useful for bikes, scooters, rentals, walks.
- Not a legal record of vehicle mileage.
- Weak signal can under- or over-count.
How a GPS odometer counts
Each GPS fix gives a position. The app measures the straight-line distance between consecutive fixes and adds them up. On a smooth, open road this tracks a car's odometer closely. With noisy fixes, small zigzags can add a little extra distance; with gaps in a tunnel, curves are cut and distance comes out shorter.
Odometer vs trip meter
Cars have two counters: the odometer, which never resets, and one or two trip meters that you zero yourself. Speedometer PRO follows the same idea with the odometer total and the trip meter on the Current Trip card. Our odometer vs trip meter guide explains when to use which.
Good uses for an odometer app
- A bicycle, e-scooter or moped with no odometer.
- A rental car, to keep your own record.
- Checking whether your car's odometer seems right over a known distance.
- Counting distance walked or run.
- Boats and trains, where there is no road counter at all.
Where it falls short
It cannot see distance driven while the app was closed, and it is not a certified record. For tax mileage, keep a proper log; see mileage tracking for taxes. For buying a used car, check the vehicle's own records; see odometer fraud.
Odometer vs trip
The odometer keeps a running total of distance measured by the app. The trip card measures a single journey.
Accuracy
The total is the sum of GPS distances, so tunnel gaps and indoor starts can make it differ from your vehicle's odometer by a few percent.
What the odometer is good for
A running total of GPS distance is handy for questions like "how far have I driven on this phone since spring?" or "how many miles did the bike cover this season?" It's also a useful sanity check on long trips: note the total at the start and end of a journey and compare with your car's trip meter. It is not a substitute for the vehicle's legal odometer, which is what service schedules, warranties, leases and sale documents rely on. If you reinstall the app or change phones, the total may reset unless your data is backed up.
Units
Distance follows your unit choice: miles with MPH, kilometres with KM/H. One mile is exactly 1.609344 km.
